Review [English ver.]: Final Fantasy XVI

PLOT

Valisthea

Final Fantasy XVI is the sixteenth installment in the head-bangingly popular Final Fantasy series, released in 2023. Final Fantasy XVI is the first series' first foray into the ninth console generation and the first major title for the PlayStation 5

The plot is set in the realm of Valisthea on the twin continents of Storm and Ash. These continents are home to the eight great crystals whom the populations dub as Mothercrystal. The Mothercrystals are a priceless resource that allows people to enjoy lives of comfort and plenty. A country is built to surround the Mothercrystals to allocate the resources fairly and squarely, although these countries frequently vie for control of the Mothercrystal for the power, wealth, and security the mighty crystals provide. The countries are The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, The Dhalmekian Republic, The Holy Empire of Sanbreque, The Kingdom of Waloed, The Crystalline Dominion, and The Iron Kingdom

Valisthea has been caught up in a phenomenon in which the Aether in a region has drained in recent years. No Aether means the water is stagnant, plants do not grow, and animals will not lie. Many Valistheans called this phenomenon the Blight. As the Blight disbalances Valisthea's ecosystem and economy, the six countries step up their aggressions and become more eager to protect their ownership of their own Mothercrsytal or seize the Mothercrystals of other countries to flee the Blight.

The main character, Clive Rosfield of Rosaria, sets out on a foreboding and parlous journey toward revenge against those responsible for the demise of his younger brother. During his trip, Clive faces unprecedented situations in that he learns he can change into one of the ancient beasts of destruction and control the fire element, which should be impossible to do as Phoenix has taken the element fire position. Clive's beast form is called Ifrit. Individuals who can transform into beasts are named Dominant. The beast itself is frequently called by the term Eikon by Valistheans

To destroy all existing Mothercrystals as the focal agenda, Clive hopes with his new immense power, Valisthea can be truly free and men can die and live on their own terms. At the end of his bloody trip, Clive brings out all the truths about the Mothercrystals that led to Valisthea's prosperity, the Blight, the Dominants, the Eikons, and humanity.

MY IMPRESSION

Clive Rosfield

I finished Final Fantasy XVI last year. Here is my honest review:

(+)

a. Eikon Battle

b. Combat Mechanics

c. Music

d. Side Quests

e. Each character's growth/the development of the main cast

f. The acting of all cast members who mainly use British accents (or European region accents) successfully bring life to their characters (awesome performance! All of them!)

(-)

a. Story (primarily the third act when Clive is at 33 until the finale)

b. Final battle is lackluster

c. The effectiveness of items

d. The usefulness of party members is questionable

e. The main bad guy (hm, not quite fit in the whole arc)

Even though this game was bested by other titles in the category of "The Best Game of the Year in 2023" at a few game awards, I still can bestow an 8.5/10 on Final Fantasy XVI because the game is gorier, sexier, and edgier than its predecessors. Notably, the gameplay further diverges from the series norm by combining the action RPG elements with hack-and-slash combat in the vein of Devil May Cry
