Review [English ver.]: Final Fantasy XVI Paid DLC "The Rising Tide"

 by: Nabila Rhapsodios

PLOT

Mysidia

The second major paid DLC from Final Fantasy XVI is The Rising Tide. This DLC has been on the market since April 18, 2024. In The Rising Tide, Leviathan is not as Lost as everyone assumed; its Dominant, still breathing, and merely in hiding. The mysterious letter author needs Clive to help its Dominant from the precarious situation, so he embarks on a journey leading him to an invincible world called Mysidia.

MY IMPRESSION

Due to full-fledged expansion compared to the Echoes of the Fallen and rewards from the Rising Tide, much more come in handy, so, by a more considerable margin, I bestow the Rising Tide a higher score than its predecessor, a 9.7 out of 10.

Ifrit vs Leviathan

Things I enjoy in the The Rising Tide are:

a. Heck, insofar the most brutal and frustrating Eikon battle I've faced. I died more in the Leviathan battle than in the base game and Echoes of the Fallen combined. Despite that, I won, which was so rewarding at the end of the fight (ultimate prize after the battle ended: Ultima Eikon Form channeled. A form packed with solid moves and abilities. Clive got even more O.P., and now he possessed ten forms!).

b. The Rising Tide music is superb. The glorious hands of Masayoshi Soken never fail to amaze me. I love he brings back the music from 2020's "Awakening" trailer to this DLC. He readjusts that music to become Leviathan's battle theme and gives the name "Cascade."

c. Meatier DLC than Echoes of the Fallen. There are more sidequests, new areas, new lore, and new (and cooler) Eikon skills than base game Eikons.

d. The new return to quest giver feature helps with fetching quests.

Things I do not enjoy in the Rising Tide are:

a. Tonberries. They still prove themselves to be my nightmare.

b. No improvement to the sprint feature. I still hate the fact that I can't sprint in towns and can't toggle sprint outside towns!

c. It turns out that the story relates to Jill, but Jill's shoved aside quickly in favor of Shula.

d. Unfortunately, with all the fantastic expansions, it doesn't change the overarching story, final boss, and ending.

I would've liked more content for Final Fantasy XVI, but it won't happen for a long time or will probably never happen. A journey across Valisthea comes to a close, and it's been a fun ride. Farewell, Clive, and friends.
