PROLOGUE
Hope is the first autobiography written by a sitting pope. Originally intended for publication after Pope Francis’ death, it was instead released during the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, a special Holy Year in the Catholic Church dedicated to renewal, forgiveness, and faith. Through this book, Pope Francis hopes to offer encouragement and moral guidance to future generations.
MY IMPRESSION
I was initially hesitant to read it. I assumed it would focus heavily on Catholic teachings and might not resonate with someone who isn’t deeply involved in church life. To my surprise, the book is far more personal than doctrinal. It traces Pope Francis’ childhood in Argentina, his family, hobbies, and experiences as a priest, while also reflecting on his papacy and his concerns for the modern world.
What I enjoyed most was seeing the human side of a figure often viewed only through his role as pope. His stories, humor, and reflections reveal how his experiences shaped his commitment to serving the poor, the sick, and those on society’s margins. He also shares his thoughts on war, climate change, technology, and AI, connecting them to broader questions about humanity and responsibility.
That doesn’t mean I agreed with everything. I found myself questioning some of his views, particularly regarding same-sex relationships and the role of women. Similarly, some of his ideas about environmental and technological challenges felt more aspirational than practical. Still, reading the book helped me better understand the motivations behind his positions.
More than anything, Hope portrays Pope Francis as a deeply human person who believes that mercy should be available to everyone, especially those who have made mistakes. The book is filled with memorable stories, reflections, and wisdom about living with humility, forgiveness, and hope.
I’d recommend this book not only to Catholics but to readers of any faith—or none at all. Its message is universal, and I especially appreciated Pope Francis’ belief that friendship and respect matter more than converting others. In many ways, that perspective captures what religion should strive to be.
May we carry forward the hope Pope Francis shared, as candles lit from one flame to the next. This autobiography is both honest and inspiring—thank you for this remarkable memoir. RIP, Pope Francis.
10/10.
